The Community Services Division at NW-SCC provides area companies and individuals with a wide range of technical training, administrative assistance, and personal development courses in the belief that learning is a life-long experience. Consisting of Continuing Education and Training for Business, this division is the flexible division of the college in providing the services not provided in the traditional education environment.
Northwest-Shoals Community College is your college. Its instructors and equipment are available for your use. The Center for Industrial Training and Community Education is but one example of campus resources available to area businesses, industries, organizations, and civic groups. It is available for your use in training with your instructor or by our staff. Contact the Training for Business and Industry Coordinators at 331-5289, Shoals Campus, or 331-6285, Phil Campbell Campus.
The Training for Business and Industry (TBI) Departments located at the Phil Campbell and Shoals Campuses work with area companies to meet specific training needs. If traditional classes, academic and/or technical, meet the employee development needs of a company, they are utilized. If traditional classes do not meet the needs, a TBI coordinator will work with the company representative to develop the training program, locate a qualified instructor to teach the class, and set the training to the companys schedule. The coordinator will also monitor the class, along with company representatives, to make sure the employees are reaching the companys desired outcomes.
Northwest-Shoals is a partner with and the home of the Alabama Technology Network (ATN) at the Bevill Center, one of seven Centers of Technical Excellence located across the State of Alabama. The ATN partnership links Northwest-Shoals with the University of Alabama System and the Tennessee Valley Authority. It is the focal point for transferring environmental and safety technology to support the industrial and economic development of Alabama, especially Northwest Alabama. For information on the environmental and safety training available through the ATN-Bevill Center call (256) 331-5422.
Working with the industrial manufacturers in our service area to provide worker training is the primary focus of the Training for Business and Industry Department. The Manufacturing Training Alliances of the Shoals and the Haleyville area are one way we are striving to provide this training. These Alliances consist of industrial representatives that understand the need for maintaining a well trained work force and training providers, Alabama Industrial Development Training, NW-SCC and the Area Vocational Centers. By working together, companies are able to meet minimum class sizes and obtain quality training locally at lower cost than sending employees off for training or by bringing in high-dollar consultants. For more information on the Manufacturing Training Alliance serving your area contact the NW-SCC TBI Coordinator or your local Economic Development Authority.
Because of the increased use of computers in every aspect of the world of work, the TBI department has regularly scheduled classes in the most popular software. Meeting two one-half days, these classes can easily be worked into the schedule of most employees. Courses include keyboarding, word processing, spread-sheets, databases, and presentation packages. Private classes, at the college or at the company site, are also available if our scheduled classes do not meet your companys schedule. For specific information on the availability of computer training in the Shoals, contact the Business and Industry Computer Training Coordinator at 331-5297, in Phil Campbell contact the Business and Industry Training Coordinator at 331-6285.
Recently added to the Training for Business and Industry Department is the Zenger Miller collection of training materials along with the certified instructors to present the material. Zenger Miller is an internationally recognized company that has developed training for most aspects of employee and supervision development. Each area has modules, offered in four hour segments, that can be selected to meet your specific training needs. For example, Frontline Leadership has 24 modules that focus on the leadership role of supervisors and managers at the front line of organizational performance. Examples of some are Giving Constructive Feedback, Taking Corrective Action, Recognizing Positive Results, Solving Problems: The Basic Process, and Getting Your Ideas Across. Other areas include Team Leadership, Leadership 2000, Quest, Team Effectiveness, and Working.
