4 American Independence Day: Happy Fourth of JULY!!!  Enjoy outdoor activities!!

26 Bert's Birthday (Sesame Street)  All children love Bert on Sesame Street!  Enjoy reading some of Bert's books to children on his birthday.  Suggested reading: Don't Forget the Oatmeal!  A Word Book (A Sesame Street Book Club)  by B. G. Ford.
27 Bugs Bunny's Birthday: Children still enjoy Bugs Bunny cartoons and also books about Bugs.  Suggested reading: Bugs Bunny's Birthday Surprise by Theresa
28 Beatrix Potter's Birthday (born 1866).  Great day to introduce children to the many wonderful books written by Beatrix Potter.  A forever favorite is The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
30 NW-SCC Summer Seminar, "Teaching and Care Giving at its BEST: Understanding and Working with Children and Families during Good Times and Bad Times", Bevill Center, NW-SCC Shoals Campus, 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.  (Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.)

AUGUST

1st Week National Clown Week:  This is a great week to enjoy a thematic unit on the circus.  Children love learning bout real clowns, dressing up like clowns and enjoying dramatic play as clowns.  Ringling Brothers Circus web site, http://www.ringling.com has great info on the circus including a link to "Clown Ally" which introduces all of the clowns and tells something about each. 
1 Francis Scott Key's Birthday - Teach children the words to the "Star Spangled Banner" and talk about the meaning of the words.
22 Home Care Provider Trainings: "Make Way for Play!" 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. - Two locations:

SEPTEMBER
1st Week Child Injury Prevention Week: Creating safe environments for children is a MUST.  Informing parents of safe environments both indoors and outdoors is important.
3rd Week Nation Child Care Week: Celebrate your Child Care Center and your staff.  Enjoy hosting an open house inviting the public to your site.
5 Labor Day - Enjoy a HOLIDAY!
11 National Grandparents Day: Grandparents are valuable resources to children's classrooms.  Invite grandparents to have a luncheon or special snack with children followed by a time of book reading or storytelling.
23 First Day of Autumn - Enjoy a nature walk to look for the signs of autumn.
26 Johnny Appleseed's Birthday (1774) - Read Steven Kellogg's Johnny Appleseed.  Enjoy some apple snacks or make apple sauce or apple pie for a special treat!
